How does one develop low self-esteem
A person can develop low self-esteem due to a variety of factors, most of these stemming from childhood experiences.
No one is born with low self-esteem but certain events and difficult experiences while growing up can negatively affect a person’s confidence. Some common causes of low self-esteem include:
Being bullied during childhood
Growing up in a very critical family environment
Experiencing severe discrimination
Trying and failing at achieving certain goals
Suffering from physical disabilities or illnesses
Being abused by a partner
Low self-esteem may be triggered by one or a mix of the above causes. Left untreated, it can lead to people becoming very unhappy with their lives.
For children, low self-esteem can be a mine field to navigate and this may negatively impact their performance at school and cause them to isolate themselves from their peers.
